Just about a week into its release, Sophia Brown’s second album ‘Catch Me If You Can’ has cracked the Top 100 on iTunes. She is the only reggae female artist in the Top 100 and the first since Etana, just about a year ago.

Brown released the album in Jamaica last week Wednesday night at the Kabana Restaurant on Hope Road, one day after the album was released worldwide by Zojak Worldwide on March 27.

The album cracking the top 100 means that the album is being exposed to an estimated 100,000 persons a day, and makes Brown a trailblazer for female reggae artists for this year.

“She has done something other female reggae artists are yet to achieve this year,” said Zojack President Aaron Mahfeldt. “She is the first to crack the top 100.”

A brand and a history

According to Mahfeldt, the relative success of the album means Brown is laying the foundation for even bigger things in the near future. “This is about building a name, a brand and a history that will build for her next album,” he said. “The formula we are using will ensure her next album breaks into the top 25.”

While there are no official figures on actual album sales, Mahfeldt believes what Brown has achieved so far with this album is significant, especially when considering the state of reggae music today. “Her sales are quite good for a stagnant reggae market in the United States at the moment,” he said. “Bob Marley’s number-one album is only selling 50-100 albums a day right now, so for Sophia to accomplish this right now on an independent basis is quite significant.”

Overwhelmed by the news

Brown, who had been working on the album for more than a year, was overwhelmed by the news, believing the news on the album ascent into the iTunes Top 100 is a sign that her years of hard work is finally beginning to bear real fruit.

“The first reaction I had was to scream on top of my lungs but then it hit me that this is actually happening and it felt so real,” said the singer who recently returned from a successful trip to South America where she won a new legion of fans. “I was overcome with emotion knowing that I worked so hard for all of this. It makes all the difference in the world when you work hard and dream big. Seeing my dream becoming a reality makes me want to continue working harder for what I believe in.”

She also lauded Zojak for helping her inch even closer to her career goals. “I couldn’t have achieved all of this without a distribution company that believes in my talent, so I give thanks to Zojak Worldwide,” she said. Brown is planning tours to South America and Dubai to promote the album.
