Mark David Chapman, 57, convicted in the Dec. 8, 1980, slaying of John Lennon outside his New York City apartment building, was transferred Tuesday from the Attica Correctional Facility, where he was an inmate for 31 years, to the Wende Correctional Facility in Alden, N.Y., Peter Cutler, spokesman for New York’s prison and parole system, told the News.
Cutler tells the news organization that it is not in the practice of the prison and parole system to disclose why an inmate is moved from one facility to another, but he did say it is unusual for someone to be moved 31 years after a placement.
The former maintenance man in Hawaii is serving a sentence of 20 years to life, the News reports. He was denied parole for the sixth time in September 2010 and is eligible for parole again in August, according to the News.
Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, has protested Chapman being paroled and is expected to protest in August, the News reports. She has said he is a threat to her family and perhaps himself, according to the news organization.
