In the Old Harbour district of Bannister, St Catherine, Jamaica, Dahlia Dawkins was born. Her early years were spent in Old Harbour then at 12 years her family moved to May Pen where she completed her education at Central High School.
Growing up with a Christian family, her father Bishop Dawkins had a great influence musically on her life. Dahlia and her six siblings are accomplished musicians. She plays the drums, guitars and keyboard.
In 1998 whilst in high school she entered the JCDC competition, and was successful, receiving a gold medal and the distinction of being the best vocalist for the parish of Clarendon. Her musical influences include Shirley Ceaser and Whitney Houston.
This beautiful songstress, musician has extended her vocal skills to radio, hosting her own show on one of the local radio stations. She will however state that her first love is music.
In 2008 being part of a duo Tru Essence made it to the finals of the Digicel Rising Star competition . They also successfully released two singles, Over and Over and Cherish the Love. Both tracks did fairly well getting quite a bit of rotation on the local airwaves.
Dahlia adopted her new pseudonym D’Essence after the splitting from the duo. She started doing studio sessions and live harmonies for artists like Everton Blender, Luciano, Lady G, Dez I Boyd, Magano , Judith Gayle and Bunny Anderson.
D’Essence is assiduously working as a recording artist, Thus far she has released singles entitled “Show Me What You Got” , “In My Room” “Love Is Real” and “Bull Buck” for Move Up Records. Her latest releases are on Cell Block Studio Records….so Music lovers, look out for D’ESSENCE
