A rejuvenated Rootsy
Yafeu “Rootsman” Osei, the man called the “Soca Ambassador,” has just released a new reggae CD called Something Wonderful. Now back from Jamaica where he recorded the CD at Bobby Digital Studio, Rootsy is brimming with confidence over his new release, which he calls “an addition” to his soca career that spans some 36 years.
There are three beautiful songs on the CD, all done in an uplifting mood and in keeping with Rootsy’s trend of showing positive vibes in his songs. Live Nice, Stand Up and Face It, Where is the love, Sign of the Times and Everybody’s World are songs Rootsy has done with positive messages. The title track , Something Wonderful, done in two versions, is “a positive mantra” which Rootsy says is a song of gratitude. It comes on the heels of another reggae song called Jah Love, released earlier.
Wild Goose Chase, another gem, “is a prayer for all the good people who have fallen through the crack through substance abuse”. The song admonishes people to stay away from drugs. The Race Is Not For The Swiftest zooms in on the need to be strong and determined in difficult times. “Never give up,” Rootsy said. “I am living proof of that.”
Rootsy told Mr Muzik he had recovered from his diabetic problems, which twice landed him in hospital. When he looks at the cultural landscape, he is unhappy over “the culture of Trinidad which is to distress the culture man.” Something Wonderful is now in all record shops. You can catch Rootsy at We Beat Calypso Night on June 8 at the St James Amphitheatre, Western Main Road, St James.
