THREE years ago singjay Shuga (formerly Brown Sugar) won the Digicel Rising Stars competition. Since then, she has been working feverishly to get that elusive hit song.

She hopes her latest single, 9.58, will do the trick. It is a play on superstar sprinter Usain Bolt’s world record time over the 100 metres and inadequate male sexual prowess.

SHUGA… hopes her latest single, 9.58, will do the trick

“It is an important song because it tells a true story which all women and even men can relate to. I’m sure the ladies who are blessed with sugar like myself, can attest and the men will just laugh about it and say ‘I did my part you need to do yours’,” Shuga said in an interview with the Jamaica Observer.

A video for 9.58 is to be completed soon, she said.

Following her win in the Rising Stars competition, Shuga (real name Mitsy Campbell) said several recording opportunities materialised with various producers but they were not fruitful.

“I wasn’t comfortable with the direction that I was being led into. It took some time for me to find my comfort zone, but now I am where I want to be,” Shuga explained.

Shuga is presently with producer Donovan Germain’s Penthouse Records which released 9.58 and will produce her upcoming album.

“When I hooked up with Penthouse Records, that’s when I started to feel like I was really on my way. I’m having the time of my life,” she said.
