NEW YORK, USA (CMC) – New York police have confirmed that two people, including a Haitian national, were killed and three others injured in violence that erupted during the West Indian American Carnival Parade in Brooklyn on Monday.

They said Nifrido Veras, 26, a Dominican Republic native, was stabbed in the neck by a drunken man and died later at hospital. Police said a 21-year-old man is assisting their investigations.

Police said Haitian national Mallinckrodt Leandre, 27, was also stabbed in the neck near the parade route, in another incident and died at the Kings County hospital.

The authorities said that two other people, including a woman, were also shot.

Police said they are still looking for Leandre’s killer and that the bloodshed marred what had been an otherwise festive occasion in which more than three  million people from around the world participated in the event on Brooklyn’s Eastern Parkway.
