Recording artist Black AM I has completed his debut video for the single Modern Day Freedom.

Black AM I, who is signed to Ghetto Youths International, is making his mark in local and international markets with his soulful reggae music.

The video which was filmed in Jamaica by renowned director Winston ‘Tyson’ Mayhew premieres on Hype TV Up and Live on Friday, January 11.

The single, written by the artist, raises timely questions about life within a 21st-century system of economic dependency. The video features the artist passionately appealing for a shift in views on how to attain freedom with a set of screens reflecting various freedom fighters and their messages.

The clip shows Martin Luther King, Haile Selassie, Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela and Marcus Garvey, among others.

Current affairs inspiration

Concerned with the direction of our nation, the young songwriter says his inspiration comes from current conditions.

“I was listening to the news, and I see the IMF telling us how to manoeuvre things so that we can have a better country. We should be able to do that by ourselves and that was really the inspiration,” Black AM I explained.

The singer hails from Nine Mile, St Ann, the birthplace of reggae legend Bob Marley. He is proud to be part of the Ghetto Youths Family since 2007 and believes that hard work got him there.

“Damian [Marley] came to my home town, I auditioned for him and he saw potential but told me I needed more practice. I worked hard. One year later, when he came back, I auditioned again and he invited me to record on his label. That’s when I become part of the family.”

He maintains that the label headed by Damian, Stephen and Julian Marley keeps him on the right track. The artiste has also toured with the Marley brothers and performed on Stephen’s Revelation Part One tour shows in the Americas, Europe and, in recent months, Dominica and Barbados.

With singles such as Dwelling and People Kill People Well, the songwriter says his music is to inspire persons to be independent.

“Knowing that you can depend on yourself and that God helps those who help themselves. We all have to step on it. I would want everyone to know this so we can be on the right path to where we’re heading, cause that’s really what matters.”
