PORT ANTONIO, Portland—-
FROM AS early as 2008, Shaneke Rogers has been a member of the Port Antonio Performing Arts Troupe. Most recently, she won the Miss Louise Bennett poster competition, which was held at the Portland Parish Library.
The 21-year-old is currently doing a course in early childhood development at the Buff Bay Heart Academy, where she is pursuing one of her many passions – youth development. She believes youth deserve every opportunity to become successful in a global world.
“I am all into youth and young persons. I also have a passion to help the needy, poor, and less fortunate who, in most instances, have been abandoned and forgotten by the society,” she commented.
“It is my intention to solicit help for those who are in dire need. I am also into dub poetry, which has allowed me to express my messages in songs. Through my performing arts troupe, we have won many trophies over the years in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission performing arts national competition.”
Impressive performance
Rogers is already a favourite of the country’s head of state, Governor General Sir Patrick Allen, after performing for him for the first time during a visit to Port Antonio in 2011. As a result of her impressive performance, Shaneke received an invitation to perform at the Governor General’s Youth Award for Excellence held at the Ken Wright Pier last year.
Since then, the 21-year-old has performed for the Ministry of Health during a visit by Minister Fenton Ferguson last year as well as at a recent installation function for approximately 40 new justices of the peace for Portland at the Jamaica Palace Hotel.
Her natural God-given talent is considered a blessing, and according to Rogers, the messages in song are merely an attempt to educate persons about the existence of the Creator and the need to acknowledge him.
