What is a man to do with a year’s supply of beer? Reggae icon Freddie McGregor should be able to tell you, since Red Stripe has committed to supplying him with a year’s worth.
The singer who recently released his 36th studio album, Di Captain, is not much of a drinker but he certainly appreciates the gesture.
“I am kind of surprised,” he said.
“I suppose it was because of our recent involvement with my album launch at King’s Plaza. I guess they felt good about how everything went and they wanted to thank us. We really appreciate the gesture.”
McGregor and Red Stripe have longed enjoyed a very harmonious relationship. Years ago, after Ernie Smith’s Life Is Just For Living Campaign had run its course, McGregor’s song Shooting the Breezewas used in the beer company’s campaign for many years.
He has fond memories of that time and recalls that several years later Sumfest promoters sought and received permission to use the song for one of their many launches.
“It’s about building relationships,” McGregor said.
McGregor is down to perform on Follow Di Arrow at James Bond Beach this weekend. Coming out of that event he hopes to put on an event with some of his colleagues who will also be performing on the show. It’s an event, he said, that is all about giving back.
He, George Nooks and Wickerman, he revealed, met and decided to stage the event that would best be described as an extensive family funday, where entertainers would adopt a child for the day and treat them to games, rides and other fun-filled activities.
“It’s about doing stuff that is meaningful,” he said. “It’s a way to show that entertainers can play a leading role in society too.”
Such ambitions usually lead to long-lasting relationships with companies like Red Stripe, he believes.
As for the year’s supply of beer, he laughed as he said he doesn’t have an idea of how much beer constitutes a year’s supply. “It could be 10 cases,” he said, chuckling at the thought. But it could also be more. McGregor said a lot of people have been calling wanting to know what he plans to do with all that beer.
“I am not much of a drinker, but I certainly have enough friends to drink them all.”
