A group of talented musicians is looking to make the type of music they want to make, rather than conform to society’s ideals. You might call them rebels, but what they really are is revolutionary – pioneering.
Acmatic started out as a duo with Phillip ‘King Lopo’ Lopez and Alex ‘The Beatnik Bill’ Delapenha and has since evolved with the addition of other creative musicians who all bring unique influences to the sound.
Acamatic told The Gleaner that its biggest obstacle has been itself.
“This is the part where we suppose to say that there isn’t much mainstream support for alternative music, and whatnot, but this is 2013, and if you’re good enough, and consistent, you can get interest in any field both locally and worldwide. I think we have had a very experimental approach to doing things, and it’s now we have a really clear-cut and quality product and outlook to share with the world,” the band said.
This ‘experimental approach to things’ may have come from the band’s fearlessness when it comes to experimenting with fusing different sounds.
LATEST COMPILATION
The band’s latest compilation, Almost EP, should reveal the direction the band has decided to go sound-wise.
“We have come up with what we feel to be one of the most interesting album launch/release parties to happen locally for our upcoming projectAlmost EP. It’s aimed to be an unconventional showcase [meant] to fully introduce ourselves to members of the media, our loyal fan base, and the public at large.
“We, in association with The Cameo Life and Red Bull, have put something together that you certainly won’t forget,” the band revealed, adding that the spectacle should take place at Top Floor, Quad, on April 25.
The ‘we’ in Acmatic is represented by:
Russell ‘Plateface (MXY)’ Meghoo – producer
Alex ‘The Beatnik Bill’ Delapenha – producer/bass
Phillip ‘King Lopo’ Lopez – main vocalist
Phillip Myers – lead guitar
Daniel Hew – bass
Joel Ashbourne – the keys
Craig ‘Flea’ Lee – the skins
Dominic Needham – vocalist
Acmatic is also taking part in an all-inclusive extravaganza, to unfold at the Negril Escape Hotel, performing as both Acmatic – the hip-hop fusion band – and Leather Jackets, the spin-off DJ outfit that specialises in electronic dance music.
The event, called ‘No Filter’, is slated for May 25 and will also feature Jillionaire from Major Lazer, alongside DJ Shell and DJ Nicco.
With all the positive feedback Acmatic has been getting, success is, no doubt, in their future. The band is currently enjoying burgeoning fame as it has been receiving endorsements from the likes of Major Lazer’s front man, Diplo, along with tons of features on various blogs, with even MTV joining the wagon.
