Reggae artist Pashon Minott is gearing up to host the third staging of Sugar Minott’s Day Tribute in honour of her late father. It is the second time the event is being hosted in Jamaica and Minott said this year promises to be the biggest yet.

Lincoln ‘Sugar’ Minott died in 2010. He would have been 57 years old this year.

Sugar Minott’s Day Tribute will be held on the May 25, which is also his birthday. The theme is ‘Black People Unite’ and Pashon wants the presentation to reflect unity.

“We have the Nyabinghi drummers and they will kick off showtime for us. I wanted them last year, but they weren’t available. They are on this year and I am personally looking forward to that. The day commemorates African Liberation Day and I also want to pay homage to that,” she said.

Sugar Minott is credited as someone who helped expose a number of celebrated performers through his Youth Man Promotions. Among them are Tristan Palma and the late Tenor Saw and Garnet Silk. The tribute will be held at Youth Man Promotions HQ, 1 Robert Crescent, Kingston 6.

TALENT COMPETITION

One of the highly anticipated activities for the day will be a talent competition, which starts at 4 p.m. The winner of the competition will get the opportunity to perform alongside Pashon Minott at an overseas event later this year.

Some of the artists expected to perform at Sugar Minott’s Day Tribute are Bounty Killer and his ANG artists, Sizzla Kalonji, The Mighty Diamonds, Ken Boothe, Queen Ifrica, Iba Mahr, Eddie Fitzroy, Jah 9, Etana, Big Youth, Horace Andy and the Minott second generation of artists, including Pashon Minott and Lincoln Minott, among others.

“Last year, we went to 4 a.m. and this year we are looking to start earlier. The production will be at a higher level because this event is going to be a staple in years to come. We are starting early, so all patrons are advised to turn out as early as 8 p.m. for showtime,” Pashon said.

The event will be protected by the police and refreshments will be on sale. Admission to Sugar Minott’s Day Tribute is $1,000. “Proceeds from this event will go towards the Sugar Minott Foundation charity. Daddy used to contribute to charity which a lot of people will attest to and we want to continue that tradition,” Pashon Minott said.
