Daughter of famous music families makes her entry
By Curtis Campbell–
Destiny Morgan is taking it a step at a time as she prepares herself to add her flavour to reggae/dancehall’s legacy much like her parents.
The 12-year-old singjay is the daughter of Pashon Minott, recording artist and daughter of dancehall’s godfather Sugar Minott and Peetah Morgan of reggae band Morgan Heritage.
The artist, who now calls herself Destiny M, the initial representing her relation to both the Minott and Morgan families, says her interest in music was inevitable, since it was always around her.
“My grandfather was always playing music at Youthman Promotions HQ and my mother is an artist, so I was exposed to music for as long as I can remember. It was just a matter of time before I started to experiment on my own,” Destiny M told The Sunday Gleaner.
Her mother, Pashon Minott, is in full support of her decision to pursue music and noticed Destiny’s talent initially, but wanted her to focus on her schooling.
Destiny M recently graduated from primary school in capacity as head girl and top achiever in mathematics and now wants to use her summer break to focus on her ultimate dream.
According to Pashon, she has the full backing of Youthman Promotions and Minott Movements production.
“Her grades are good and I know she loves her music, so for the summer, we are just putting as much work as possible in to seal her introduction into the music industry,” she said.
The mother of two highlighted the fact that no child artiste has risen to star status in Jamaican music since QQ, who is one of the more popular established dancehall acts. She therefore believes there is a gap in the market for child entertainers, with Destiny M standing ready to fill the space.
The young artist is also plotting to start a charity foundation in an attempt to assist the homeless.
This move was also influenced by the work of Sugar Minott, who also donated to charitable institutions annually via his Family Fun Day at Youth Man Promotions HQ.
Sugar Minott also had a charitable institution named in his honour.
Having recorded her first single called Summertime and gearing up to launch her Destiny M Foundation, the young artiste is expecting a lot of work.
“I normally give away shoes that I have grown out to the less fortunate because I always feel sad when I see homeless people. I have a lot of shoes, so sometimes even if I have never worn them, I will still give them to people who I think need them more than I do. Between the charity and my music, I know I am going to make a positive impact on society,” she said.
The artist believes she has the capability to deliver good music. She also says she has the right personality to connect with an audience.Summertime features her younger sister Journey Morgan, otherwise known as Swag J.
Journey Morgan is an up-and-coming rapper.
Inna Wi Genes films recently shot a video for Summertime at Hellshire Beach in Portmore, while Destiny M has also remixed Morgan Heritage’sTell Me How Come. That single is yet to be released, but she hinted that the remix will have tongues wagging.
“Jamaica, just prepare your ears for Destiny M. I am coming at you with positive music. Big up to my auntie Ashanty Minott; she is one of my main motivators and my grandfather’s legacy will continue to live as long as we have music,” she concluded.
Plans are already being made to do an extensive promotional campaign for Summertime. Destiny M is also expected to debut her single atRasta Fest.
