Five acts are down for for Best Reggae Act. They are Jamaica-born, UK-based dancehall artiste Stylo G, Mavado, Sean Paul, Tarrus Riley and Popcaan.
Riley, Mavado and Popcaan are previous nominees. Sean Paul has won the award three times.
Stylo G, whose real name is Jason McDermott, is also nominated in the Best Newcomer category.
This year, he scored a Top 20 hit on the British pop chart with Soundbwoy. His latest single, Bad, features old school deejay Sister Nancy.
To be nominated for a MOBO Award is like a great achievement. It’s an amazing feeling and to win would be a crazy bonus. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hopefully I win,” Stylo G told Splash.
Sean Paul had two top 10 hits in the UK this year. The Other Side of Love reached number six on the national chart which he also topped with girl group The Saturdays on What About Us.
Riley’s Gimmie Likkle One Drop was popular in UK reggae circles, while Mavado hit reggae charts with At the Top It’s Just Us, and Take it which features singer Karian Sang.
Popcaan has not had a big hit in Jamaica this year. However, his Unruly Rave fared well in the UK.
The MOBO Awards were established in 1996 by Kanya King and Andy Ruffell to recognise artistes of any ethnicity or nationality who perform black music.
