Singer Eljai has paid tribute in song to the late Cool Ruler ofreggae, Gregory Isaacs.
The tribute comes in the form of Gregory Medley, which combines covers of three of Isaacs’ classic hits.
Gregory Medley features Night Nurse, Number One, and All I Have is Love, three of Isaacs’ number one hits from the 1980s. Isaacs died in October 2010.
In a release to the media, Eljai said he decided to pay tribute to the late reggae singer to help in keeping his memory alive.
“I decided to pay tribute to Gregory because I know within myself that his music is real and needs to be cherished. This is my way of keeping it alive,” he explained.
Eljai had met Isaacs on several occasions over the years, sharing stages with him at several high-profile events in the United States. Over the summer, while he was in Jamaica, the California-based Eljai met up with Isaacs’ widow June.
He acknowledges that he is a fan of Isaacs’ work.
“Some of my favourite Gregory Isaacs songs include All I Have is Love,Number One, Night Nurse, and the list goes on. I love them all,” he noted.
Musicians who worked on Gregory Medley include Carroll Bowie, Dean Fraser and Kirk Bennett, among others.
Eljai has been riding on a high in recent months, having made his way to the number-one spot on several reggae charts with the single For You. He is also putting together the finishing touches to his upcoming album, which is due in early 2014.
Additionally, he is set to embark on an African tour with African reggae star Victor Essiett.
“The song For You is doing well in Africa right now, so the fans want to see me over there. It’s a lot of work on this journey and we are confident that things are heading in the right direction,” Eljai said.
