With a father and grandfather who are well known for doing reggae music, singer Jemere Morgan says he is trying to make a name for himself.
Jemere, the son of Gramps Morgan and grandson of Derrick Morgan, has been doing music for about three years.
Before music, he said he wanted to be a lawyer, basketball player, footballer or rapper. However, he said it was after his father heard him rap and sing that he decided that he wanted to be a singer.
“He (Gramps) heard me singing and told me that I should be singing. He is my biggest inspiration, he is my guidance. He keeps me on track,” the 18-year-old Jemere told The Gleaner, noting that he has been on tour with Morgan Heritage for the past three years.
Despite being in a musical family, Jemere says he does not feel pressured.
Instead, he said, “It reminds me to go hard and step it up. I am creating another lane for the next generation that’s coming.”
Promotions for Neighbourhood Girl, a song on his EP, I Am Jemere, set for release between April and May, is already in train.
He added that he also has songs like Run Dem Out, First Kiss, and Sunshine Glow.
“The work has been coming. It’s (Neighbourhood Girl) been well received, so I am just hoping the fans will love the EP. I just have to keep putting out good music and try to be a motivation and icon for the youth of the world and spread love through reggae music,” he said.
Although music is his focus, Jemere says he still has his eyes set on tertiary education within the next two years.
“I am looking to go to music college. I want to study music engineering and business … depending on how my career is going,” he said.
