SLY Dunbar has been selected the top reggae drummer by largeup.com website which released its Top 10 reggae skin-beaters last week.
The website covers the Caribbean entertainment and leisure beat.
Dunbar, who first came to prominence in 1971 as a 19-year-old on Dave and Ansell Collins’ 1971 hit song Double Barrell, was cited by the largeup.com ‘judges’ for his “creative thinking and innovation with patterns”.
The prolific musician has played in some of reggae’s most influential bands, including The Revolutionaries, house band at the Channel One studio in the 1970s; and Word, Sound and Power which backed Peter Tosh.
Dunbar is best known as half of Sly and Robbie with bassist Robbie Shakespeare, the famed ‘Rhythm Twins’ who fashioned roots-reggae group Black Uhuru’s sound during the late 1970s.
He has also worked with Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Grace Jones, Gwen Guthrie and No Doubt.
