JAMAICA’S sound system culture will be recognised at the Reggae on the River festival which takes place in Humboldt County, California from July 31-August 3.
A number of sound systems, mainly from southern and northern California and Oregon, will play at the event, the longest running reggae festival in the United States.
These home-grown ‘sounds’ include Jah Warrior Shelter Hi-Fi (featuring selector Rocker T) from San Francisco; Guerrilla Takeover and One Wise Sound out of Mendocino County in northern California; Blessed Coast Sound, a regular on the growing Pacific Northwest sound system circuit; and Brimstone Sound which hails from Eugene, Oregon.
Reggae on the River attracts a massive crowd to its nature setting in Humboldt County. This year, Jah9, Chronixx and Mykal Rose are part of the line-up.
The origin of sound systems can be traced to the late 1940s in downtown Kingston. The medium took off in the 1950s and 1960s when music producers including Arthur ‘Duke’ Reid, Clement ‘Coxson’ Dodd and Prince Buster used their ‘sounds’ to expose their productions and artists.
