TRINIDADIAN soca artist Bunji Garlin’s hit single Differentology (Ready For the Road) will be promoted to a pop audience through a new deal with RCA Records and VP Records.

The two labels have joined forces to promote the song, which has made inroads in the United States.

In an interview with the Observer yesterday, Bunji Garlin spoke about the significance of the deal.

“What it means for me is a bigger engine now to further propel what I do. It (the deal) will be on a broader scope and spectrum and allow for a wider reach for my work,” he said.

Written by Garlin, Differentology was recorded at Black Ice studios in Trinidad, produced by Keron Thompson and released by Sheriff Music in late 2012.

The track was later remixed by hot multinational producers Major Lazer for their EP, Lazers Never Die Vol 4.

That version peaked at number nine on the iTunes World Music Chart and featured in an episode of the hit ABC show, Grey’s Anatomy.

In 2013, Differentology received a Soul Train Award for Best International Performance. It also won HOT 97 FM’s Battle of The Beats competition, as well as MTV Iggy’s Song of the Year.

The 35-year-old Garlin admits he is surprised at the song’s success.

“I expected it to do something, but not on the level that it is now,” he said.

Garlin is currently working on several projects, including songs for his major label album debut scheduled for release late this year.

It will be his first full-length release since 2007’s Global which was distributed by

VP Records.

Born Ian Alvarez, Bunji Garlin has been a dominant figure in the soca/Carnival scene in his country for over

a decade.

In 2000 and 2001, he won the Ragga Soca Monarch competition; the Young King title in 2001; and coveted International Soca Monarch four times.
