Patrick ‘Becky Issachar’ Beckford—

KINGSTON, Jamaica —

Patrick ‘Becky Issachar’ Beckford, a stalwart of the Rastafari group Twelve Tribes of Israel, and outstanding schoolboy athlete, died at the University of the West Indies on Wednesday.

Beckford’s daughter, Malaika Beckford, told OBSERVER ONLINE that her father succumbed to complications from injuries he sustained in a fall on July 21.

He was hospitalised since the incident which broke his back. Beckford underwent emergency surgery but his daughter says he suffered a seizure early Wednesday morning and died at 10:00 am.

Born in Manchester, Beckford attended Kingston College. He represented the school at Boys Championships, winning the Class One 100 metres in 1965.

Beckford joined the Twelve Tribes of Israel in 1969, the year it was founded, and was a president of the Rastafarian Trust Fund. He also represented the organisation on fact-finding visits to Ethiopia.

He was part of the Selassie Brothers group that produced events by the Twelve Tribes of Israel.

Patrick ‘Becky Issachar’ is survived by his wife Kathleen, nine children and six grandchildren.
