MarcusGarveyAwards2014

The Universal Negro Improvement Association is a social, friendly, humanitarian, charitable, educational, institutional, constructive and expansive society. It was founded by Marcus Garvey, Jamaica’ first national hero, in 1914 in the city of Kingston. At its height, the UNIA boasted a membership of over 12 million members with over 1000 divisions worldwide. It is the largest global confraternity of Africans ever organized in history.

In this 100th year of our inception, the UNIA will be hosting its fifth annual Marcus Garvey Awards ceremony, a charity fundraiser in support of our numerous social projects and programs on Saturday August 17 at 3:00pm on the East Lawns of Devon House. Cocktails 3pm, Award Ceremony 4:15pm.

We will be celebrating the 127th anniversary of the birth of our founder Marcus Mosiah Garvey.

In his famous thesis entitled African Fundamentalism, Garvey advocated that we should canonize our own saints and elevate to positions of fame and honour black men and women who have made their distinct contributions to our racial history.

We invite you to join us in recognition of ordinary Jamaicans who have made extraordinary contributions to their communities and to the nation, to share in the rich culture and history of our nation and to honor the enduring legacy of National Hero Marcus Garvey.

This year we are pleased to invite you to provide coverage for the UNIA Marcus Garvey Awards, 2014.

Kindly indicate your acceptance and RSVP by phone or email to the address above or uniajamaica@gmail.com. We look forward you joining us for an afternoon of celebrating Self Respect, Self Reliance and Empowerment.
