IT has been five years since singer Stevie Face hit the mark with his cover of Aaron Neville’s Tell it Like it Is and the album of the same name. He’s back in the hunt with My Time, which will be officially launched in Kingston Wednesday on compact disc.
Like Tell it Like it Is, My Time is produced by Paul ‘Computer Paul’ Henton. Face spoke to Splash this week about his third album and why there was such a big gap between his previous set.
“We went back in the studio after the last album an’ did about 40 songs from which we chose 15. The album was competed in March but we wanted the right time to put it out,” he said.
My Time was released digitally in August. Its lead single, Da Lovin’ Yah Nice, has also been out for some time.
Though he covers five songs including Storybook Children and Groovy Kind of Love, 39-year-old Face points out that he wrote nine of the tracks on My Time including Da Lovin’ Yah Nice and Dream On The Day.
“Because Tell it Like it Is was such a big hit some people thought the album was pure covers. There were 16 songs an’ nine were originals,” he stated.
Tell it Like it Is, the song, did well in the United Kingdom where Face’s popularity grew due to a series of shows promoting track and album. The set exceeded the response to its predecessor, Coming at You, which was released in 2001.
The St Thomas-born Face (given name Anwar Henchard) was placed in the ‘one to watch’ column during the late 1990s. Songs like the Phillip ‘Arrows’ Linton-produced I’m in Love was responsible for this initial recognition but a life-threatening auto accident in South Florida stalled his career.
In 2008, he got back on track with Henton whose credits include Jimmy Cliff’s version of I Can See Clearly Now, from the hit soundtrack to the movie Cool Runnings.
Stevie Face expects to promote My Time with a shows in the UK in early 2015.
