US-based reggae artist Prestige Ali is reaping success with his latest single, Thank You Jah, a song that as its name suggests thanks the Almighty for the simple joys of life.
“I have been getting a great reaction to the single on social media. They have been seeing the video on HYPE, CVM and RE TV. The video was shot in downtown Kingston and Forum Beach and depicts people doing their everyday hustle. The song is also on Stampede’s Street Charts,” an overjoyed Prestige Ali said.
The singer said he got the inspiration to do the song when he met a terminally ill lady who was given just a few days to live by a team of doctors.
“There was a fun day for her and other terminally ill patients at the hospital and when I met her, she was so happy to be alive, she only had a few days to live and she had so much joy, that really blew me away,” he said.
He recently performed the single to rave reviews at clubs in the tri-state area of New York.
“The response has been incredible, I have never had so much buzz on a single,” he said.
Born Ali Higgins in the parish of St. Andrew, he later moved to Clarendon where he attended Green Park All Age School. As a teenager, he impressed as an athlete, but it was his singing talent which was recognized first by adults. During his teenage years, he performed constantly in local events in his community in Clarendon.
He migrated to the USA and decided to try to make it on his own. He got a job to support himself, and began focusing on his second dream, being a music star. In 1992, Prestige Ali met someone from his hometown of Clarendon who was starting a record label in New York called Original Records. His first recording was a cover version of You Are My Everything by Surface, but it wasn’t a commercial success. Fast forward to the year 2014, and Prestige Ali is finally on the verge of a major breakthrough single.
“A lot of disc jockeys have been linking me for dubplates from Europe and Africa and the Caribbean. The song is also on several mixtapes all over the world. Plus the song is getting rotation on IRIE and HITZ, I am on the verge of my first major hit,” he said.
