EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD singer Skip is the latest member of the Marley clan to ply his trade in the music arena.
He is preparing the digital release of his debut single Cry to Me next Tuesday. Co-produced by the singer and Paul Fakhourie, the track is on the Tuff Gong International label.
The accompanying video was released earlier this week.
“Cry to Me is a message for this girl I know, well really a message for everybody who seems to focus on their insecurities. I’m just saying it’s cool to be who you are, don’t let society deceive you and make you believe you’re not enough,” Skip told Splash.
Skip (given name Skip Marley Minto) is the son of Bob Marley’s daughter, Cedella, and also the grandnephew of reggae singer Marcia Griffiths (a member of Bob’s backing vocal group the I Three).
The 18-year-old was born in Jamaica but raised in Florida. He is currently pursuing an associate degree in business at the Kaplan University in Florida.
He said his desire to pursue music was a calling.
“There was no real reason behind the timing. I simply had a song that I felt truly passionate about and I felt ready to perform,” he said.
The singer said he has received valuable industy advice from his mother, Cedella, as well as his uncles Stephen, Damian and Ziggy.
“Being that my mom was raised in the music industry, I truly value any guidance she provides me. Aside from giving me tips on vocalising and performance style, she helps me navigate how to connect with and cultivate the audience. My uncles Stephen, Damian and Ziggy have also been advising me every step of the way,” said Skip.
