Gavin ‘GMG’ Burgess—

HE may be only three feet four inches and confined to a wheelchair, but Gavin ‘GMG’ Burgess is a big party animal.

The 30-year-old refuses to let his physical impediments stop his love for promoting parties in Jamaica and Florida.

“I was always a fan of dancehall and its lifestyle. I loved going to parties so in 2007, myself and a few friends decided to keep our first event called ‘The Arrival’. It was held in both Jamaica and Miami,” he said.

Other parties followed such as Flava Rock and Big Man mi Tun in Miami.

A past student of Mona High School in Kingston, Burgess grew up in a tough section of Mountain View known as Top Range.

He said at age four, he was diagnosed with a bone disorder that stopped his growth.

“I was able to walk but at the age of 18, I fell and hurt my spinal cord and as a result my nerves became damaged. This was how I ended up in the wheelchair and lost my physical movements. I have no movements in my hands and so forth,” he explained.

“My disabilities don’t stop my drive in becoming the best at what I desire. I love dancehall and I am going to be in it as long as I have life,” Burgess continued.

In 2003, he migrated to Miami but maintains his link with the Jamaican dancehall scene.

Burgess travels regularly to Jamaica to promote Cripple Fridayz, which is held monthly in Miami, and Lights Out Wednesdayz in Barbican, St Andrew.
