The enduring drum and bass team of Lowell ‘Sly’ Dunbar and Robert ‘Robbie’ Shakespeare are among this year’s recipients of Musgrave Medals from the Institute Of Jamaica.
Eight persons will receive medals, with Sly and Robbie and Harvard University professor Orlando Patterson getting gold.
The other awardees will receive silver medals. They are singer Myrna Hague-Bradshaw, creative choreographer Patricia ‘Patsy’ Ricketts, poet Dr Ralph Thompson, photographer Donnette Ingrid Zacca, architect Errol Charles Alberga Jr, and physician Anthony Vendryes.
The recipients will receive their medals in a October 28 ceremony in the IOJ’s Lecture Hall at Tower Street, downtown Kingston.
Patterson and Sly and Robbie are being recognised for ‘distinguished eminence in literature and music’, respectively.
Dunbar and Shakespeare began making music together in the late 1970s. They have produced, and played on songs by Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru, Dennis Brown, Grace Jones, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and No Doubt.
The Musgrave Award is the oldest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. It was introduced as a memorial to Sir Anthony Musgrave, governor of Jamaica (1877-1883) who founded the IOJ in 1879.
