THE legendary Wailers band is scheduled to perform in India for the first time this week, the Indo-Asia News Service (IANS) reports.
Led by stalwart bass player Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett, they are headliners for Saturday’s NH7 Weekender Festival at RBDSA Sports Complex in the city of Shillong, often described as India’s rock capital.
The Wailers will also perform in the city of Kolkata on November 1.
“This is our first time to India and we are longing to explore beautiful Shillong. We expect exposure to the ancient culture and all that it has to offer,” Barrett told IANS.
Barrett is the only original member of the line-up that toured with Bob Marley during the 1970’s, the band’s classic period.
His son Aston Jr, on drums, Dwayne Anglin (lead vocalist), Cegee Victory (backing vocals), Audley Chisholm (lead guitarist), Melvin Glover (rhythm guitar) and keyboardist Chaka Taylor are other members of the Wailers.
Located in northern India, Shillong has a growing reggae scene. Since 2008, a group of musicians known as Roots Reggae Band, pay tribute to Marley on his birthday (February 6) or May 11, the day of his death.
