Stylistically, Gregory Isaacs and Keith Richards were worlds apart. Isaacs’ suave vocal delivery earned him the moniker the ‘Cool Ruler. Richards’ eccentric mannerisms inspired Johnny Depps’ Jack Sparrow character in the hit movie franchise Pirates of The Caribbean.
Last week, the Rolling Stones guitarist released the video to his cover of Love is Overdue, one of Isaacs’ many hit songs.
The song is from Crosseyed Heart, Richards’ first solo album in over 20 years. It will be released next month.”It’s one of the many great songs he wrote that I’ve always wanted to do,” said Richards in an interview with Guitarworld magazine.
Love is Overdue was one of Isaacs’ early hits. Produced by Alvin Ranglin, it was released in 1974. Isaacs died in October 2010 at age 60.
The 71-year-old Richards and fellow ‘Stones’ Mick Jagger have been big fans of reggae music since the early 1970s. Peter Tosh was once signed to their Rolling Stones label.
Richards once owned a home in St Ann and was a good friend of Justin Hines of the Dominoes fame. He produced two albums of traditional Rasta songs with Wingless Angels, a group from Hines’ hometown of Steer Town, St Ann.
