British soul singer Joss Stone has come top of two of Billboard Magazine’s end of year reggae chart rundowns.

The star, who released Water for Your Soul this year, was reggae artist of the year and had the biggest selling reggae album of 2015 in the US.

The record spent eight weeks at the top of the chart, selling 29,000 copies.

She beat a live album from Bob Marley, Easy Skanking in Boston 78, into second place but news hasn’t gone down well with hardcore reggae fans.

Many have said that they think it’s ridiculous that a former soul singer with one reggae-themed album has topped the chart.

Earlier this year Joss Stone said she’d recorded a reggae album after encouragement from Damian Marley.

She told FaceCulture: “I’m just writing, and it’s like we just have these songs and it sounds nice, the end.

“I go and play them to Damian and he was like, ‘You’ve got to make a reggae record Joss,’ and I said, ‘Nooo.’

“I think the ‘I try it attitude’ is part of my every day life. It’s taken me somewhere good.

“I’ve gone to places, and sung with different people, and experienced different types of music, all because of that attitude.

“You try it and if it sounds good, you keep it. And if it doesn’t, you don’t.

“I made a deliberate decision to not make it a straight reggae record.

“That’s very conscious and not an accident because I don’t want to annoy anyone and I just want to enjoy music and become part of whatever it is I’m doing.”

Joss Stone, who grew up in Devon, is well known for her musical “genre jumping” and has recorded seven studio albums with styles ranging from R&B, soul and blues to funk, reggae and rock.
