IT’S been five years since Sean Kingston had a major hit in the United States, but that could change soon given the buzz around his new single One Away.
The song is produced by Jordan McClure and David Hayle of Chimney Records.
An animated Kingston spoke about the song last week on the set of the video shoot at Rebel T HQ in Kingston.
One Away is about me trying to get this girl’s attention. In the video you will see me chasing this girl and she’s not giving me the time of the day. But towards the end of the video I end up getting her,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Directed by Rogen ‘Ruption’ Walker of RD Studios, the video was shot in Kingston.
“The video is just a nice vibe, a pool party vibe, a block party vibe. I had to come to Jamaica to shoot this video because Jamaica is where I’m from and I had to go back to the roots and the culture. Mi love mi country and this is where it started for me,” said the 26-year-old artiste.
He explained how the link with Chimney Records came about.
“They reached out to my management. I’ve been hearing about them for a while. The thing is this: when I’m looking at producers, I look for the best. They bridge the gap between reggae and dancehall and pop music. It’s a perfect 10, a perfect match.”
Kingston (real name Kisean Anderson) was born in Miami and moved to Jamaica when he was six. His grandfather was producer Lawrence Lindo, better known as Jack Ruby, who produced Burning Spear’s landmark Marcus Garvey album.
Kingston hit it big with Beautiful Girls in May 2007. The song went number one on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, Spain and the United Kingdom.
His subsequent hits include Me Love, Take You There, Fire Burning, Face Drop and Letting Go (Dutty Love) featuring Nicki Minaj.
No Letting Go (Dutty Love), which has sold over one million copies, is Kingston’s last major US hit, peaking at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2010. The video for that song was shot in Ocho Rios.
