FOR reggae singer Nesbeth, Thursday’s command performance will remain an unforgettable one. The entertainer not only performed his hit song My Dream at the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Andrew Holness at King’s House in St Andrew, but shared the stage with him.
“We expected the song to be a success because of the aggressive campaign we have placed around it. But for it to be used in the campaign and for the artist to perform it at the swearing-in of the prime minister speaks volumes. It is a good look for his career,” said Nesbeth’s publicist, Raymond ‘Shadow’ Small.
In addition to Jamaica’s top politicians and business people, several overseas diplomats and overseas media witnessed Nesbeth’s performance.
On Sunday, My Dream was recognized by the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) as the Song of the Year. It also found its way to both the People’s National Party and Jamaica Labour Party political campaign in the run-up to the February 25 election.
Small said Thursday’s performance was a bittersweet one for Nesbeth, who is mourning the passing of his wife Ann-Marie Elliott-Nesbeth.“He [Nesbeth] would have wanted his significant other to see this performance. It was a personal invitation from the office of the Prime Minister-designate… and after the ceremony the Prime Minister offered his condolence to him and his family… and it has nothing to do with partisan politics,” Small told the Jamaica Observer.
Elliott-Nesbeth, the mother of two of Nesbeth’s five children, was with the entertainer for more than a decade. She died on February 17 from an undisclosed illness in the United States. She was 32.
In a recent Facebook post, Nesbeth remembered his wife as a motivator.
“My wife was my best friend. My biggest motivator and my strength. We have been battling this illness for years, throughout it all she never gave up nor was she scared.
“She was a fighter. Ann’s faith, spirit and vibes kept me going. I feel like she took part of me with her, she is the love of my life, how does one accept such lost,” he wrote.
A thanksgiving service for Elliott will be held at the New Life Assembly of God Church at 148 Constant Spring Road, Kingston 8, next Saturday.
The wake will be held on Friday, March 11 at Paradise Court in Arnett Gardens.
