Mitzie Campbell, more popularly known as Shuga, has embraced the opportunities that came with winning Rising Stars in 2009.

Immediately after pocketing the cash prize and putting the trophy in her house, Shuga began working with Penthouse Records. She told THE WEEKEND STAR that she has taken full advantage of the opportunity to the point that she now performs all over the world.

“It has been a progressive journey,” Shuga told THE WEEKEND STAR.

EXTENSIVE TRAVEL

She said reggae has been the vehicle that has allowed her such extensive travel, especially across Europe. “A reggae music dem want, and I do reggae music,” she laughed.

Shuga told THE WEEKEND STAR that she has been invited to perform at several international reggae shows and festivals. This week, she heads to perform in Switzerland.

Shuga is preparing for the release of her newest single called A Will, which is produced by Nebulus Records.

“It’s a motivational song. Full a motivation and inspiration, and I’m hopeful it will give strength to struggling men and women,” Shuga said.

The pending release of A Will follows Shuga’s 2013 hit, Ride Di Riddim, a song that Shuga said speaks to the need for equal opportunity to be given to women.

In February, Shuga was invited by David Rodigan to perform as part of an all-female session hosted by BBC 1Xtra. Marcia Griffiths, Nadine Sutherland, Tanya Stephens, Queen Ifrica, and Jah-9 were also in the line-up.

When asked by THE WEEKEND STAR if she considered herself a feminist, the answer came without hesitation.
