RICHARDS… first female from the island to win an ISKA World Championships gold medal–

Jamaican Subrina Richards created local martial arts history yesterday when she successfully defended her lightweight points sparring crown at the 10th International Sport Kickboxing Association’s (ISKA) World Championships underway in Stuttgart, Germany.

Richards, a 20-year-old University of the West Indies student, defeated Germany’s Eichler Angelica in a close final that ended with the host fighter throwing in the towel.

Richards’s victory broke a hex which seemingly plagued previous Jamaican ISKA world champions, who, for varying reasons, failed to defend their titles.

The Jamaican is eyeing an unprecedented second gold medal at the May 18-22 tournament. She is down to compete in continuous sparring in which she is also considered favourite.
