The fourth Black River Day takes place July 30 in St Elizabeth’s chief town, with ‘The Ultimate Street Festival’ as its theme.
GT Taylor is a member of the Black River chapter of the St Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce, organi
zers of the annual event. He said it has lifted an awareness of the parish’s history, especially among its youth.
“Black River Day is very important to the parish. It is a day the people will be educated about Black River and St Elizabeth on its contribution to the building of Jamaica,” Taylor told the Jamaica Observer. “It brings commerce to the town, and the youths can expose their talent.”
He said a roster of activities are still in the planning stages but disclosed that there will be a fire display by the Jamaica Fire Department, music by sound systems and a gospel show.
Black River Day is among a number of cultural events commemorating Emancipation Day (August 1) in Jamaica. A highlight of last year’s renewal saw St Elizabeth’s Custos, Beryl Rochester, reading the official document which marked Emancipation and the end of slavery in the West Indies in 1838.
