It was a sonorous celebration of local culture as the Jamaican Folk Singers put on a fine performance at the University Chapel on the grounds of The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus in Kingston last weekend.

“The audience loved it and thought it was a world-class performance,” Coleen Lewis, event organizer, told the Jamaica Observer.

The hour-and-a-half program was broken up into seven sections, each offering delightful favorites that brought back many childhood memories and garnered plenty of applause upon completion.

The sections ranged from the opener Nice Up Yuself, the religious- tinged In God We Trust and Revival. Mixed within all were beautiful renditions, complete with drama, of Long Time Gal and Oil In My Lamp.

However, it was the later song groupings that got the audience going, as many could relate to Jamaican schoolyard staples like I An’ Out and Brown Girl.

Those a bit older easily recognized Solas Market and Dip An’ Fall Back. Along with being pulled down memory lane, the group delivered on the humor front with No Cahfi and Righteousness Unity Medicine, better known as RUM.

The concert was held to raise funds for several final-year students who needed assistance with the payment of their tuition fees.

Lewis explained that the fund-raising efforts were bolstered by members of the legal fraternity who donated, even though they couldn’t be in attendance.
