The Gregory Isaacs Foundation will be hosting their first annual Red Rose for Gregory fund-raising event on Sunday, February 12, at the Constant Spring Golf Club in St Andrew.

The project is being spearheaded by Isaacs’s widow June, who told the Jamaica Observer that the idea came out of a discussion with a friend.

“Gregory is known for his lovers’ rock music, and in order to connect him to Valentines Day we came up with the idea. It is all about love and red roses… what better way to connect him,” she said.

Red Rose for Gregory will feature a stellar line-up which includes American group Atlantic Starr, Gem Myers, Karen Smith, Patricia Edwards, Robert Minott, Yvad, Christopher Martin, Ikaya, D’Major, Kaydeno, and Steven “Cat” Coore of Third World fame.

“This event is going to be spectacular as plans are in place to ensure that we have an incredible show that can assist in funding the foundation’s charities,” she said.

Event headliner Atlantic Starr was among the top urban contemporary acts of the 80’s and fared well in the adult contemporary market as well. They are known for singles such as Secret Lovers, Always and If Your Heart Isn’t It.

Known as the “Cool Ruler” because of his laid-back vocal style, Gregory Isaacs was one of the artists who crafted lovers’ rock reggae with hits like All I Have is Love, Love is Overdue, Soon Forward and Night Nurse. He died from cancer in October 2010 at age 60.
