The annual Best of The Best show returns to its hardcore dancehall roots this year, but promoters are also reaching out to soca fans with a diverse card. The 11th staging of the event takes place May 28 at Bayfront Park in Miami with Mavado, Aidonia, Konshens, Charlie Blacks, Christopher Martin, Jahmiel and Dexta Daps as headliners.
For last year’s 10th anniversary, the show had a old school theme.
“We went for more of a dancehall lineup compared to previous years when we had foundation singers,” co-promoter DJ Jabba told the Jamaica Observer.
The veterans are still in the mix. Josey Wales, Brigadier Jerry, General Trees and Mad Cobra will represent the classic dancehall era.
Soca and dancehall acts from Trinidad and Tobago and The Bahamas have been added. According to Jabba, the presence of Patrice Roberts and Lyrikal from T&T, and Julien Believe of The Bahamas, is strategic.
“People from the islands have always supported us, so we’re showing them love for the love they’ve shown us over the years,” he said.
Last year, promoters went for a mature lineup led by Beres Hammond, Cocoa Tea and Half Pint. Jabba, an influential figure in New York reggae, reckons the 10th anniversary show drew 19,000 fans.He added that the show has grown since it was first held in 2007, which has made it easier to market.
“Best of The Best is a brand now, a brand that sells itself. It’s no longer just about the show, its about the atmosphere,” he said.
