Citing a resurgence in home-grown reggae, Tads International Record will release Dennis Brown: The Inseparable Reggae Family, a multi-track album of hit songs. A May release date has been given.
Tad Dawkins, president of the independent company, said the demand for traditional reggae prompted him to select 40 songs for the compilation.
“The reggae thing getting stronger again, so whenever the pendulum swing wi move with it. This is something to kick it off,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Though it bears Dennis Brown’s name, The Inseparable Reggae Family has only two songs by the crown prince of reggae. They are Inseparable, the jazzy hit produced by Willie Lindo; and Caress Me Girl, which Brown produced for his DEB label.
Other popular cuts on the set are Dancehall Stylee by Sugar Minott; Tribal War (George Nooks); People’s Choice (Ray Darwin); and Never Cheat by Christopher Martin.
There are also songs from John Holt, Gregory Isaacs, Freddie McGregor, Horace Andy, Sizzla, Chronixx, I-Octane, and Hezron.
Brown was among the first acts Dawkins worked with after starting his company in the late 1970’s. Their best -known collaboration is Here I Come, a song Brown produced for DEB in 1979.
Dawkins’ version was released in 1984. It became an anthem after Brown began using it as the introduction to his shows.
He also produced Wildfire, a hit song by Brown and Holt.
