Roots-reggae harmony group, The Abyssinians is currently on a four-gig jaunt in the South American country of Brazil. The outfit performed last night in Recife, Pernambuco; and will be performing tonight in Sào Bernardo Sào Paulo. Other dates are in Aracaju, Sergipe on the 19th; and Villa Eco the following day.
“People check for The Abyssinians. They have a following in Brazil and in parts of South America,” said Prince Manning, who plays drums with the group.
Manning is son of co-founder Donald Manning and is a member of Rootz Revealerz band.
The Abyssinians was formed in 1968 by Manning; his brother Linford; and Bernard Collins. The group shot to prominence the year after with their hit song Satta Massagana. The song, a Rastafarian hymn, was recorded on Sir Coxson Dodd’s Studio One label.
The group enjoyed moderate success with hits including Declaration of Rights, Y Mas Gan, and Let My Days Be Long.
