“It’s a great idea and I thank the people of Montego Bay for this gesture. As a boy, I used to travel on Gloucester Avenue to go to Cornwall Beach, and whenever I am in Jamaica and head to the beach, I always travel on Gloucester Avenue,” he said.

The St James Municipal Corporation is moving a resolution to rename the strip. The resolution, which will be debated at the next council meeting in July, described Jimmy Cliff as “one of the great sons of the Somerton Division in St James”.

“Jimmy Cliff is a noted son of St James, who has risen to astronomical heights in the music industry worldwide, and it is fitting that we in this parish give recognition to him in an appropriate way,” Jamaica Labor Party Councilor Homer Davis, who represents the Cambridge division in southern St James, was quoted as saying.

The Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation also supported the move.

Jimmy Cliff (given name James Chambers) is star of the 1972 cult film classic The Harder They Come. He is the only living musician to hold the Order of Merit, the highest honor that can be granted by the Jamaican Government for achievements in the arts and sciences.

Cliff is known for tracks including Harder They Come, I Can See Clearly Now, Many Rivers To Cross, and You Can Get It If You Really Want.
