The St Ann Fire Department has estimated the cost of damage from a fire at the Grand Bahia Principe Hotel in Runaway Bay, St Ann, this morning as approximately J$15 million.

No one was injured in the fire which started sometime after two Wednesday morning.

A spokesperson at the department said a call came in at 2:28 a.m. that a fire was at the hotel.

Three units from Brown’s Town and St Ann’s Bay responded and put out the fire, which was confined to the roof of a section of one of the towers at the hotel.

The blaze was brought under control just after 4:15 a.m.

The damaged area is said to have been used as storage for several items, including chemicals.

The fire department, in the meantime, has commenced investigations into the cause of the fire.

Grand Bahia Principe is one of the largest hotels in Jamaica.

In 2016, the Spanish-based Bahia brand, which also has hotels in the Dominican Republic and Mexico, won the award of Best Tourism Company in the Caribbean, presented by British company, Cristal International Standards.
