Jamaica’s Finance Minister Audley Shaw is the focus of public outrage following an RJR News report that he had racked up cell phone bills amounting to $8.3 million.
RJR News on Monday reported that the bills were generated from March last year to February this year.
This has triggered a firestorm, with persons taking to the airwaves and social media criticizing the Finance Minister for incurring the hefty bills.
The situation prompted Prime Minister Andrew Holness to hold a meeting on Tuesday afternoon with members of the Cabinet to discuss the use of their government assigned cell phones.
RJR News tried to get a comment from Mr. Shaw on Tuesday afternoon at Gordon House but he declined.
In December, Mr. Shaw’s cell phone bill reached more than $838,000 and in August it climbed to more than $1.5 million. In October, it was more than $4.2 million.
The Finance Ministry said Mr. Shaw has paid roughly $2.6 million for personal roaming data usage.
