ALLAN Mensch’s latest single, Don’t Run, is one to watch on the New York’s Foundation Radio Network chart.
The song, produced by St8 Fyah Beat, rose to number 27 in its third week. It is on the Tropic Vibes Records label.
“ Don’t Run is basically about what’s going on in the world at present. It is testament to the chaos that the world is in,” Mensch told the Jamaica Observer.
Mensch — who is originally from Portmore, St Catherine — now resides in Florida. While residing in Jamaica, he harboured dreams of becoming a recording artiste. He put those dreams on hold after migrating.
“You start to think different when you become a father. So, my musical ambition had to take a back seat. It was all about ensuring my children were well taken care of,” the singer said.
although he plied his trade as a mechanic, however, the music bug continued to bite and he feels the time is now right to pursue those dreams.
Mensch remembers the late singer Tyrone Taylor ( Cottage in Negril) as having a huge impact on him. He recounts an experience travelling from Portmore to Kingston with his guitar. Taylor, who was unknown at the time borrowed the instrument, and began strumming away.
By the time their journey ended, the strings were broken.
“He threw the guitar back to me and said: ‘Here, my name is Tyrone Taylor, you gonna hear about me!’”
Months later, Mensch had the pleasure of being the opening act for Taylor.
Mensch said he never tried to pursue music in Jamaica as while he resided in the east, the recording studios were in the west.
“I only know two artists who crossed those barriers and they were Welton Irie and Johnny Ringo,” he said.
Mensch is busy in the studio working on some new material, songs he had been sitting on for many years.
“Finally, I’m having the time to give voice to all the musical lessons that I want to unleash on this present generation,” he said.
