AMERICAN reality TV star and rapper Cardi B is burning up the Billboard Rap, R&B Hip Hop and Hot 100 charts with her debut single Bodak Yellow (Money Moves).

The song, released by Atlantic Records, is currently number one on the aforementioned charts and has been certified platinum for having more than one million in sales in the United States.

But who is Cardi B?

She was born Belcalis Almanzar to a Trinidadian mother and Dominican father. Raised in The Bronx, New York, she embarked on a career as an exotic dancer and built up a large social media following through Instagram.

In 2015,she became a cast member of the VH1 reality television series Love & Hip Hop: New York.

In November of that year Cardi B made her musical debut on Shaggy’s remix to his single Boom Boom, which also features Popcaan.

“I was introduced to Cardi B by Dee Sonaram from my label. He suggested that she would be great for the Boom Boom track and I agreed, as I was already a fan of hers and her big personality on Love and Hip Hop. I found her to be the highlight of the show,” Shaggy told Jamaica Observer yesterday.

“I’m happy that she’s the breakout star of the show. It was a pleasure to have worked with her and I wish her continued success,” he continued.

Cardi B has also collaborated with Konshens for Back It Up (which also features Hood Celebrity). The song is featured on Cardi B’s mix tape Gangsta Bitch Vol 2 which was released in January.

At the 2017 BET Awards, Cardi B was nominated for Best New Artiste and Best Female Hip Hop Artiste awards. She has nine nominations in the upcoming BET Hip Hop Awards.

Cardi B is the first solo female rapper to top the Billboard Hot 100 with a debut single since Lauryn Hill’s Doo Wop (That Thing) topped the chart in 1998.
