Most artists believe they have a hit song every time they leave the recording booth. Some allow fans and critics to make that call.
Antiguan singer Causion has felt the hit song fever a few times in his 20-year career. The latest rush comes with Better For You, his recently released ballad.
He co-produced the song with Maurice Gregory, with whom he has collaborated for 15 years. While he is confident he has a hit on his hands, Causion told Jamaica Observer that feeling comes through feedback from other sources.
“When all is said and done, it’s not what I think because self-praise has no value. But when people gravitate to something at first go, you know it’s special,” he said.
Better For You is Causion’s second single of the year. The first, a cover of Third World’s Cold Sweat, was also co-produced by Gregory, that band’s keyboardist.
Causion said he felt a similar surge some years ago when he recorded Born Fe Dread, which remains, arguably, his best-known song.
With Better For You, he is in a better position to promote given the extensive reach of digital distribution.
“ With Born Fe Dread, we just didn’t have the mechanism we have now,” said Causion.
Born Gregory Bailey, Causion grew up listening to roots reggae in Antigua and began recording after moving to the United States. His early songs were done in New York, and he has maintained a steady studio and live schedule since relocating to South Florida a decade ago. Causion, who has four albums to his name, has toured with Third World for the last three years.
