Jamaica’s global superstar Usain Bolt was the recipient of the president’s award at the IAAF Athletics Awards in Monaco recently where Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Belgian Nafissatou Thiam were named the male and female World Athletes of the year.

Six time Male Athlete of the Year bolt closed out his illustrious career after the IAAF World Championships in London in august where he won a bronze medal in the 100 meters

The eight time Olympic gold medalist won four world 200meters titles, three at 100metrs, and holds the world record over both distances, 9.58 at 100m and 19.19 at 200meters.

Meanwhile the main awards on the night went to the 26-year-old high jumper Barshim who ended the season unbeaten and Heptathlete Thiam.

Barshim ended the 2017 season with nine of the best 11 jumps in the world this year, capped by his two 2.40metres leaps

Thiam who collected last year’s female rising star award after claiming the Olympic heptathlon title, began 2017 by winning the European indoor pentathlon title with a world-leading 4870 points.
