Charly Black—

Dancehall artist Charly Black continues to make headway on the international music scene.

After earning platinum and diamond plaques and hitting the 100 million mark on Spotify as well as making an appearance on the popular Wendy Williams Show, the Gyal You A Party Animal singer has inked a multi-album recording deal with Universal Music.

Signing with Aftercluv Dancelab, Universal Music Latin Entertainment’s dance music imprint last month, the deejay, who has been creating waves particularly in the Latin market, expects to make even more headway on the international market in the coming years.

Charly Black told THE WEEKEND STAR that the partnership has been great so far and he just wants to continue making waves as a dancehall artiste on the international scene.

“There’s been a great synergy working with Universal/Aftercluv so far, we’ve had some great successes and have broken a lot of barriers together already,” he said. “I’m happy about the deal and looking forward to partnering with them now on a bigger scale to make more great music and continue to represent dancehall and Jamaica on an international level.”

Lengthy negotiations

He also explained that with the contract being a multi-album deal, there is no ‘expiration date’ and he will therefore be taking his time and ensuring the music he puts out under this new deal is impactful.

The deal came after lengthy negotiations, but Julian Jones-Griffith, Charly’s manager, is pleased with the outcome.

“It’s great to see another dancehall artist on a major label. Universal gives us a global platform and they will plug Charly into the right partnerships and placements to push his music and brand further,” Jones-Griffith expressed. “With Universal Music’s worldwide network of labels, there are many positive benefits this deal will bring to Charly’s career, especially streaming and radio, and hopefully, we can open some more doors for others to come through.”

Luis Estrada, managing director of Universal/Aftercluv, described Charly Black as “a global hitmaker and a future icon”, and expressed an excitement at having him on board.

“We are extremely excited to have him as a member of the Aftercluv family,” he said. “He’s a prolific singer-songwriter and the leader of the new generation of dancehall music, as well as a perfect reflection of what Universal/Aftercluv represents, global cultural dance music.”

To celebrate the milestone, fans can expect a new collaboration with Juan Magan and Charly Black on the You’re Perfect remix, via Aftercluv, to be released today.

Charly’s debut album on Universal is expected in 2018.
