VETERAN singer Toots Hibbert will be using his upcoming single titled Ten Shillings to introduce his grandson, King Trevy. It is slated for release in the first week of February on the D&F LLC imprint.

“My grandson Trevado is a star. He can write good songs and the name King Trevy fits him, as he has a lot of great music in him that don’t come out as yet. But with me and producer Nigel Burrell working with him, we are going to do great things,” Hibbert told the Jamaica Observer.

The singer shared the story behind Ten Shillings.

“The song is remembering what I used to get for doing music in the 1960’s… I sang several number one songs but got little or nothing. Sometimes they would buy me a patty, but I loved the music so much I just did it anyway,” he said.

Hibbert is one of Jamaica’s most prolific hit-makers. With his outfit Toots and the Maytals, he scored countless timeless tracks, including 54-46, Bam Bam, Sweet and Dandy and Pomp and Pride. In 2004, he secured the Best Reggae Album Grammy for True Love.

He is seeking to pass on his musical legacy o his grandson, 27-year-old King Trevy (given name

Trevado Hibbert).

A past student of Kingston Technical High School, King Trevy said he was initially drawn to the field of mechanical engineering.

“When I was a teen I wanted to be an engineer, but I lost interest… so I decided to switch my focus to music. I did a lot of underground rap songs, but my grandfather said I am ready now,” he said.

He said he is influenced by a wide range of artistes including Biggie Smalls, Big Pun, Tupac, and Nas as well as Buju Banton, Bob Marley, and his grandfather Toots.

“My music can be classified as hip hop reggae. It is a new style that I have figured out, but I will be experimenting with it more in the lab with Nigel and grandfather in the future,” he said.
