American rap group Migos has sampled The Wailers classic Get Up, Stand Up for their song Crown The Kings, which is on the trio’s latest album Culture 2.
Crown The Kings debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, R&B Hip Hop Album, Rap Album and Canadian album charts last week. It is the second number one for the Georgia-based trio who formed in 2009.
The members of Migos are Quavious ‘Quavo’ Keyate Marshall, Kiari ‘Offset’ Kendrell Cephus and Kirshnik ‘Takeoff’ Khari Ball.
Crown The Kings is co-produced by Marshall and DJ Durel.
Get Up, Stand Up was recorded in 1973. It was co-written by Bob Marley and Peter Tosh and appears on The Wailers’ Burnin’ album, released in 1973 by Island Records.
Tosh also recorded the song for his 1977 album, Equal Rights. Get Up, Stand Up is recognised as one of pop music’s great protest anthems.
Migos have had success collaborating with Caribbean artistes. Their hit songs include Body (with Sean Paul) and MotorSport (with Nicki Minaj and Cardi B).
Other big hits by the group are Bon Appetit which they did with Katy Perry, and the number one hit Bad and Bougee.
