SINCE he began recording professionally over 20 years ago, singer Ras Kronik has stuck to the roots-reggae sound that inspired him. But for his latest song, Get High, he went for a different feel.
Get High is done to a House beat produced by Steve “Mr Mig” Migliore who has worked with big league acts like Beyonce and Taylor Swift. It is Ras Kronik’s first attempt at House, a frenetic techno sound with which many top artistes like Madonna and Janet Jackson have experimented, with great success.
“As a creator you always want to create something new, and that’s what happen in this case. After making an EDM attempt a couple years ago with producer Jackel Larenzo, I got a link from Mr Mig from Maxx Beat and I sent him the vocals, and that’s how Get High Future House was born,” said Ras Kronik.
The recently released song addresses the global embrace of ganja in the last five years. Having lived in Las Vegas for over a decade, and traveled throughout the liberal United States west coast, Ras Kronik said recording a ‘weed tune’ seemed appropriate.
Doing it to a dance beat that appeals to clubbers made the project even more enticing.
“We just want to do something different, you know? Create a sound from what you hear on a day to day basis and talk about getting high from the highest grade, especially now that it has been legal throughout most part of the world,” he explained.
Ras Kronik (real name Everton Edwards) is originally from James Hill, Clarendon. He has been recording since 1996, with his first released song being More Than Gold.
Four years later came Original Lick, his best-known song in Jamaica.
He is part of a close-knit reggae community in the gambling mecca of Las Vegas. He has released two albums since moving there: The Real Thing Remix which came out in 2013, and Wild N Free which was released three years later.
Stick Around, Ras Kronik’s follow-up song, hears him returning to more familiar territory. It features the Bonafide Band, a Jamaican aggregation also based in Las Vegas.
Ras Kronik is scheduled to perform at Reggae In The Desert on June 9 in Las Vegas, alongside Collie Buddz, Third World, Mr Vegas, Cocoa Tea, Kabaka Pyramid and The Mighty Diamonds.
