Veteran musician Larry Silvera died last Thursday at age 69 due to complications from a stroke. His sister, Angela Stewart, said he passed away at the Continuous Care home in St Andrew.
Silvera, who was born in Kingston, was a seasoned session bassist who recorded and toured with artistes such as Bunny Wailer, Prince Far I, Barrington Levy, Michael “Mikey Dread” Campbell, Everton Blender, and Queen Ifrica.
Most of his career was spent in Toronto, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Drummer Aubrey “Prince” Manning knew Silvera for over 35 years. They toured in bands that backed Blender, Queen Ifrica and Leroy Sibbles.
“Larry was a good, good musician. Play any kinda music; reggae was him thing, but him did love jazz,” Manning told the Jamaica Observer.
Silvera migrated to Canada in the early 1970s and got involved in the burgeoning Toronto reggae scene. He formed the band Ishan People, which also included singer Johnny Osbourne.
Larry Silvera is survived by his mother, stepfather, three brothers, four sisters, five children, and four grandchildren.
His thanksgiving service takes place June 27 at Roman’s Funeral Home on Molynes Road.
